In gardening, the question often arises whether soil areas should be mulched or kept bare. The answer is not an "either-or", but a matter of location and purpose. While organic mulch reduces evaporation in perennial beds and supports soil organisms like earthworms, it presents an insurmountable barrier for specialised solitary bees.
Since around 70% of native wild bee species build their nests underground, unplanted, sunny and well-drained soil spots are essential for their reproduction. A garden that covers every square metre with woodchip or dense planting deprives these species of their habitat.
Mulch material – whether grass clippings, leaves or woodchips – simulates natural soil cover. This benefits decomposers and regulates the microclimate on the soil surface. However, a nature garden requires a nuanced approach. Wildflower meadows, for instance, require nutrient-poor (low-fertility) conditions. A layer of mulch would introduce nutrients that encourage the growth of vigorous grasses, crowding out species-rich wildflowers.
