Alopecurus aequalis is a non-woody, broad-leaved grass typically reaching around 20 cm in height. It is native in Great Britain and occurs in sunny, permanently wet environments such as marshes, pond margins and damp meadows. The flowering period extends from May to October. Ecological indicator values derived from Central European data suggest a strong preference for permanently moist to wet soils, with a neutral to weakly acid reaction and very low tolerance of salinity; the species is associated with habitats experiencing low levels of disturbance.
