A low-growing, herbaceous plant with broad leaves, typically reaching around 23 cm in height. It grows in shaded locations on fresh, nutrient-rich soils and forms arbuscular mycorrhizal associations. Individual leaves can be quite large, with a mean area over 9,000 mm², and the seeds average roughly 35 mg in weight.
