It is found in full sun on fresh, moderately moist ground and shows a marked preference for calcareous or base-rich soil of low nutrient status. The site typically experiences little disturbance. In common with many grasses it forms associations with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. Its broad, green foliage distinguishes it from more fine-leaved relatives.
