A robust, broad-leaved sedge reaching about 0.7 metres in height. The leaves are broad, with a recorded leaf area of around 7000 mm². It prefers full sun and wet, often waterlogged soils, indicated by a high moisture requirement. The species typically grows on neutral to slightly acid ground and is not tolerant of salt. Low levels of disturbance are characteristic of its habitats. Flowers appear in June and July, and the small diaspores weigh just under 0.84 mg.
