Cladium mariscus is a perennial sedge native to Great Britain, found in open calcareous fens, swamps and other permanently wet, base-rich habitats. It forms a grass-like tussock of broad, non-woody leaves and typically reaches about 1.5 metres in height. The plant requires full sun and thrives in wet to swampy, nutrient-moderate soils with a basic pH; it tolerates slight salinity. Flowering occurs from June to July. Mycorrhizal associations are variable. The species appears in undisturbed locations and shows low tolerance of habitat disturbance. Its small seeds (diaspore mass 2.4 mg) are dispersed naturally.
