The plant flowers in late spring and early summer, specifically from May to June. It is a terrestrial species, forming arbuscular mycorrhizal associations. The diaspores are relatively small, with an average mass of 32 mg. Its natural range includes temperate and tropical Asia, mainly China. It has been introduced to other parts of the world as an ornamental plant. In Great Britain it is an established introduction.
