Site in full sun on very well-drained, dry, poor to moderately fertile, alkaline to neutral soil. Water sparingly; this plant is drought-tolerant.
Thymus vulgaris is an introduced species in Great Britain, where it is established. It is a woody shrub that reaches about 25 cm in height, bearing small, broad, evergreen leaves. The plant requires full sun and grows on dry, calcareous, nutrient-poor substrates; it favours warm sites with low disturbance. Flowers are produced over a long season, from May through October.
