Elymus caninus is a broad-leaved, non-woody grass reaching approximately 0.85 metres in height. It bears leaves with an area of around 1,140 mm² and disperses seeds with a mass of about 3.7 mg. The species is associated with arbuscular mycorrhiza. In Great Britain it is native, occurring primarily along woodland edges and margins, where it favours partial shade, fresh moisture levels and nutrient-rich, calcareous soils. Flowering occurs during June and July. The plant experiences low disturbance in its typical habitats and grows in moderately warm conditions.
