Equisetum hyemale is a native, evergreen fern found in Great Britain. The erect, unbranched shoots are photosynthetic, with a typical height around 0.51 metres, and persist throughout the year. It grows best in semi-shade on fresh to moist, calcareous soils of moderate fertility, in habitats with low disturbance and moderately warm temperatures.
