Prefers full sun and a consistently moist, well-drained soil of moderate fertility. Suitable pH ranges from neutral to slightly acidic. As a herbaceous perennial, top growth naturally dies back in autumn, with new shoots emerging in spring.
Asparagus officinalis is a herbaceous, non-woody perennial with broad leaves, typically reaching around 0.8 m in height. In Great Britain it is an archaeophyte, long established in the flora. The plant is fully sun-demanding and grows on fresh, moderately moist ground, preferring neutral to weakly acidic reaction and moderate nutrient levels. It is unsuited to saline conditions and shows low disturbance tolerance. Its mycorrhizal associations are of the arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) type. Flowering spans June to August. Diaspores have an average mass of about 20.6 mg and leaf area averages 13.2 mm².
