Morphological traits: TRY ID3 (CC BY 3.0) & TRY ID81 (CC BY)
Prefers full sun and a fresh, moderately moist, nutrient-poor soil with a calcareous tendency. Best suited to wildflower meadows or naturalistic plantings on poor ground.
A herbaceous perennial with a non-woody, terrestrial growth form and broad leaves, Hypochaeris maculata reaches a height of around 35 cm. Its diaspores have a mean mass of approximately 1.5 mg, and its typical leaf area is about 2030 mm². The species flowers from May through August. It occurs on fresh, moderately moist, base-rich soils that are low in nutrients, in habitats approximating fresh, moderately infertile meadow. Ellenberg-type indicator values describe a plant of full sun, fresh moisture, calcareous reaction and low nitrogen levels, with a low disturbance severity. Hypochaeris maculata is native in Great Britain.
