Lolium perenne is a native perennial grass, widespread in meadows, pastures and lawns. It grows as a broad-leaved, non-woody plant reaching about 27 cm in height. The species favours full sun and thrives in fresh, moderately moist, nutrient-rich soils. It is associated with low-disturbance habitats and is a component of some semi-natural grassland communities. Flowering occurs from May through to October. Its small diaspores (around 1.9 mg) and relatively large leaf area (about 469 mm²) are typical of a productive forage grass.
