In Great Britain, flowers are produced from July to October. The above-ground parts then die back, and new plants emerge from seed the following spring.

Plant in full sun in a moderately moist, fertile, well-drained soil, ideally with a calcareous character. Flowering occurs from July to October, after which the plant naturally completes its growing cycle. No additional special care is necessary beyond maintaining soil moisture during dry spells.
A terrestrial, non-woody herb of anthropogenically influenced habitats, Nicandra physalodes was first recorded in central Europe around 1800 and is an introduced neophyte in Great Britain. Mature plants typically stand 55 cm tall, with broad leaves averaging around 8,890 mm² in area. Root associations are of the arbuscular mycorrhizal type. Flowers appear from July to October and are followed by lightweight seeds (mean diaspore mass 0.87 mg). The species is a strong nutrient indicator, favouring calcareous, nitrogen-rich, moderately warm situations in full sun, with a preference for fresh soil moisture.
