## Cultivation
Pilosella officinarum requires a sunny position and a very well-drained, nutrient-poor soil. It is ideally suited to a rock garden, gravel bed or a dry, south-facing bank where competition from other plants is low. Do not enrich the soil with fertiliser or organic matter, as this will encourage lush growth that is not in keeping with its natural habit. Once established, it is highly drought-tolerant and needs little attention beyond removing any neighbouring plants that shade it out. It may self-seed gently in suitable conditions, increasing the colony.
Native in Great Britain, Pilosella officinarum is a small, herbaceous perennial reaching around 11 cm in height. It is a plant of dry, nutrient-poor, acidic grasslands, often on sandy or rocky ground, and also occurs in alpine meadows and extensive, low-intensity pastures. The broad leaves form a basal rosette, and the plant sends up flowering stems that bear yellow flower heads from May to October. The flowers are a rich source of nectar and pollen, attracting a variety of bees, hoverflies and other insects. The tiny, wind-dispersed seeds are produced in abundance and help the plant colonise open, disturbed patches within its preferred habitat. It thrives in full sun and tolerates very low soil fertility, making it a characteristic species of species-rich, unimproved grassland.
