Requires full sun and a fresh, moderately moist soil of normal fertility. It copes well with alkaline conditions and moderate soil salinity. The plant associates with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and benefits from undisturbed ground.
Plantago maritima is a herbaceous, non-woody plant with broad leaves and a terrestrial growth form. Its typical height is around 19 cm, leaf area averages 749 mm² and diaspore mass is about 0.56 mg. It is native in Great Britain and occurs in open, sunny situations on moderately moist, ordinary soils. The species shows a marked preference for calcareous or basic substrates and has moderate salt tolerance. It generally faces low levels of disturbance. Root systems form arbuscular mycorrhizal associations. Flowering extends from June to October.
