Position in full sun in very well-drained, fertile soil. Water sparingly, allowing the substrate to become dry between waterings.
Portulaca oleracea is a terrestrial, non-woody, broad-leaved succulent. The plant typically reaches a height of about 0.1 m and bears leaves with an average area of 47.55 mm². Seeds are minute (diaspore mass 0.14 mg). It shows a strong preference for full sun and dry conditions, though it can also occur on fresh (moderately moist) soils; it favours calcareous, nutrient-rich ground and is not salt-tolerant. Disturbance tolerance is low. Flowering extends from April to September. In Great Britain it is an introduced, established neophyte, first recorded around 1500 according to general European data.
