Rhus typhina is a woody, terrestrial plant, typically growing as a shrub or small tree up to approximately 6.9 metres. Its broad, deciduous leaves average 1174 mm² in area. The species prefers full sun and moderately moist, neutral to weakly acid soil of medium nutrient status. Flowering occurs in June and July, and the diaspores weigh around 10.3 mg. It forms arbuscular mycorrhizal associations. It originates from parts of North America (including eastern Canada and the northwestern United States), Africa and tropical Asia. Rhus typhina has been introduced to Great Britain via horticulture, where it is now established and classified as invasive.
