Ruta graveolens is a herbaceous, non-woody perennial belonging to the Rutaceae family. It has broad leaves and typically reaches a height of about 0.4 m. From June to August, it produces flowers. The species is adapted to full sun and dry conditions, preferring calcareous, nutrient-poor soils. It occurs in extensive grassland and nutrient-poor meadow habitats, and it tolerates only low levels of disturbance. The plant forms arbuscular mycorrhizal associations and produces small seeds with a mean diaspore mass of approximately 2 mg. In Great Britain, Ruta graveolens is introduced and established.
