Sambucus racemosa is a deciduous, broad-leaved woody shrub, typically reaching a height of 2.4 m. It is introduced and established in Great Britain. The leaves are broad, with an average area of around 1868 mm², and the plant has an estimated diaspore mass of 1.84 mg. Flowering occurs in April and May. The shrub is adapted to semi-shaded conditions on fresh, nutrient-rich, neutral to slightly acid soils with low disturbance and moderately warm temperatures.
