Provide a sunny position with moderately moist but free-draining soil that is calcareous and low in nutrients. Avoid rich feeding and waterlogged conditions; this species is adapted to lean, lime-rich substrates and will thrive with minimal intervention once established in a suitable wildflower meadow or grassland setting.
Silaum silaus is a non-woody, broad-leaved herbaceous plant, typically reaching about 0.55 metres in height. It is native in Great Britain, where it inhabits sunny sites on fresh, moderately moist, lime-rich but nutrient-poor soils. The plant shows low disturbance tolerance and prefers a moderately warm climate. It flowers from June to September. The diaspores have an average mass of approximately 1.7 mg, and leaf area averages roughly 4480 mm². The species forms arbuscular mycorrhizal associations.
