About this species

Originating from parts of Europe, Africa and Asia, Sorghum halepense is a terrestrial, broad-leaved grass that grows to a typical height of 1.4 metres. Leaves have an average area of about 5260 mm² and the plant is non-woody with a graminoid growth form. Diaspores (seeds) weigh approximately 3.5 mg. An arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis has been recorded. In Great Britain, the species is introduced and established; it favours full-sun locations on fresh, moderately moist ground. The soil preference is strongly nutrient-rich and calcareous to alkaline. The plant tolerates low disturbance and moderately warm temperatures. Flowering takes place from July to September.
