Trichophorum alpinum is a perennial member of the sedge family (Cyperaceae), growing as a compact, non-woody grass-like plant. It reaches about 15 cm in height and bears broad, evergreen leaves that persist throughout the year. The species flowers from April to May. It is native in Great Britain. Habitat preferences, derived from indicator values, point to very wet to swampy conditions in full sun, especially on nutrient-poor substrates. It is typically associated with raised bogs and fens, and can also occur in alpine grassland, snow-beds and low-nutrient meadows. The plant shows a disturbance indicator for low severity. Its light requirement is high, corresponding to open, unshaded sites, and it tolerates only moderately warm temperatures.
