Scientific profile
Vaccinium microcarpum is a native dwarf shrub of wet, acid habitats in Great Britain. It is a woody, broad-leaved evergreen, typically reaching only about 16 cm in height. The species forms ericoid mycorrhizal associations and is adapted to full sun, permanently moist to wet soils, and extremely nutrient-poor, acid conditions. Its growth tolerates only slight disturbance. Flowers appear in June and July. The small seeds have a mean diaspore mass of around 0.42 mg. In the British Isles it is recorded from raised bogs and blanket bog communities, where it contributes to the low-growing shrub layer.
