Vaccinium uliginosum is a low, deciduous shrub of the heather family (Ericaceae). It typically reaches heights around 17 cm and bears broad leaves with a mean area of about 81 mm². The leaves are shed each autumn. The plant forms ericoid mycorrhizal associations. Flowering occurs from May through June, and the minute diaspores, which weigh approximately 0.21 mg, are released after flowering. It is native in Great Britain.
