Grow in full sun, on moderately moist, well-drained soil that is neutral to alkaline. This annual is not especially nutrient-demanding and completes its life cycle within one season.
Sinapis alba is an annual herbaceous plant that typically reaches about 40 centimetres in height. It has broad leaves and a non-woody, herbaceous growth form. The plant is an archaeophyte in Great Britain, having been introduced before 1500 and long established. Outside Britain, it is widely recorded across southern and south-eastern Europe, northern Africa and temperate Asia. Flowering occurs in June and July, and the blooms provide a moderate source of nectar and pollen for visiting insects. The root system does not form mycorrhizal associations. In the wild it favours full sun, moderately moist conditions and calcareous or basic soils of medium fertility.
