Carex sylvatica is a perennial, non-woody sedge forming grass-like clumps. Native in Great Britain, it typically inhabits shaded sites on fresh, moderately moist, calcareous to neutral soils of moderate fertility. The plant reaches an average height of approximately 45 cm, with broad leaves (leaf area around 677 mm²). Flowering occurs from June to July. The small diaspores weigh about 1.55 mg. It is associated with low-disturbance environments and is a characteristic species of several shaded forest and woodland plant communities.
