Prefers full sun and dry, well-drained soil. Adapts to normal garden soil of moderate fertility; neutral to slightly acid conditions are ideal. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi can support nutrient uptake.
Cota tinctoria is a broad-leaved, non-woody herbaceous plant reaching roughly 0.4 m tall. It thrives in full sun on dry, moderately fertile soils with a neutral to slightly acid pH. Flowering spans June to September, and its roots form arbuscular mycorrhizas. In Great Britain, it is an introduced and established species, as recorded by the Plant Atlas 2020.
