Digitaria ischaemum is a low-growing, non-woody grass with broad leaves, typically about 15 cm tall. It is a light-demanding species that grows on moderately moist, nutrient-medium soils with an acidic reaction and no salt tolerance. It forms arbuscular mycorrhizal associations. Flowering takes place from July to October. The species has an indicator value for low disturbance. In Great Britain it is introduced and established, having probably arrived as a seed contaminant.
