Lathyrus odoratus is a herbaceous, broad-leaved member of the Fabaceae family. This terrestrial, non-woody plant typically reaches around 0.9 m in height. The root system forms arbuscular mycorrhizas. Blooming occurs from June through September. The species grows best in full sun, with fresh to moderately moist, neutral to slightly acid soil, and moderate nutrient levels; it is warmth-loving. Its known range includes parts of Europe and Africa. It has been introduced and is now established in Great Britain.
