As a native component of dry, open habitats, Filago germanica contributes to the typical flora of sites with shallow, nutrient-poor soils and forms part of the natural biodiversity of such low-productivity communities.
The flowering period extends from May to September.

Full sun and a very free-draining, nutrient-poor growing medium are essential. Water sparingly, as the species is adapted to dry conditions and quickly declines in moist or fertile soil. Suitable for gravel gardens or dry crevices.
Filago germanica is a native wild plant in Great Britain, belonging to the Asteraceae family. It is a herbaceous, non-woody plant with broad leaves that grows to roughly 24 cm tall. The species inhabits open, sunny, and dry places such as sandy heaths and skeletal grasslands, where it experiences low disturbance. It favours a neutral to slightly acid soil reaction and very low nutrient levels. Flowering extends from May to September. The plant forms arbuscular mycorrhizal associations. Its leaves are relatively small (around 27 mm²) and its wind-dispersed seeds are extremely light, with individual diaspores weighing about 0.07 mg.
