Frangula alnus is a deciduous, broad-leaved shrub or small tree, typically reaching around 3.5 metres in height. Native in Great Britain, it grows in partial shade on moist, neutral to slightly acid soils of moderate fertility. The species tolerates only low levels of disturbance and forms arbuscular mycorrhizal associations. Flowering takes place from May to June.
