Provide a position in full sun with very well-drained soil. The plant thrives in calcareous, nutrient-poor substrates and does not tolerate waterlogging. Once established, it requires little additional water.
Iris germanica is an introduced and established perennial herbaceous plant in Great Britain. It grows to a height of around 0.4 metres, bearing broad leaves. The plant favours sunny, dry, calcareous and nutrient-poor conditions, typically occurring in limestone dry grassland and low-intensity meadows. Flowering can extend from April through to September. The species is not native to Britain; its natural range lies in south-western and south-eastern Europe and southern Africa, and it has become widely naturalised after escaping from cultivation.
