Muscari comosum belongs to the asparagus family (Asparagaceae). It is a non-woody, herbaceous plant with broad leaves. Flowering spikes emerge in early spring, from March to April, and each spike carries many small, urn-shaped blooms. These flowers are a rich source of both nectar and pollen, rated 5 out of 5 for their value to pollinators. The plant grows from a bulb and requires a sunny position. It occurs naturally across southern and south-eastern Europe, but in Great Britain it is an introduced species that has become established in naturalised populations.
