Phacelia tanacetifolia is a broad-leaved, non-woody herbaceous plant originating from the Americas, including areas of northern and southern America. In Great Britain it is introduced and established. It reaches a typical height of about 0.58 metres. Its leaves are broad, with an average area of 3123 mm², and its seeds are very light, around 1.5 mg. Flowering takes place from May to August, and the flowers are rated highly for both nectar and pollen availability.
