Plant in a container of aquatic compost or loam placed in still water with partial shade. Water should be neutral to slightly acid and of moderate fertility. Flowering occurs in summer without special attention. Remove decaying foliage in autumn to reduce organic load.
Native in Great Britain, Potamogeton perfoliatus is a perennial aquatic herb with broad, translucent leaves that clasp the stem, typically reaching 0.55 m in height. It grows in still or slowly moving fresh water, preferring half-shade and permanently wet to swampy conditions. The water is usually neutral to weakly acid, of moderate nutrient content, and the species shows low tolerance of disturbance; it is not salt-tolerant. Arbuscular mycorrhizal associations have been recorded. Small greenish flowers are borne from June to August, and the diaspores have a mean mass of about 3.4 mg.
