This fern is adapted to semi-shaded positions with fresh, acidic, nutrient-poor soils. It is not demanding of fertility and naturally occurs in low-disturbance settings. Spores are produced in late summer.
Pteridium aquilinum is a native fern in Great Britain, belonging to the family Dennstaedtiaceae. Plants are non-woody, terrestrial and broad-leaved, typically reaching a height of around 1.61 metres. The preferred conditions are semi-shade with a fresh (moderately moist) moisture regime, an acid reaction and a low nutrient status, reflecting a poor, oligotrophic soil. It forms arbuscular mycorrhizal associations. Disturbance tolerance is low, and the species is associated with habitats that experience only slight disturbance. Spore-bearing structures are produced from July to September. Its conservation status is rated as Least Concern (*).
