The plant is a neophyte, introduced and now established in Great Britain, originally from northern America. Flowering takes place from March to May. It grows best in partial shade, on fresh (moderately moist) soils that are moderately fertile, and tolerates a neutral to weakly acidic reaction. The foliage is shed in autumn.
