Serratula tinctoria is a non-woody, broad-leaved, herbaceous perennial native in Great Britain. Typically reaching about 0.45 metres in height, it forms arbuscular mycorrhizal associations. It favours semi-shaded positions on fresh, calcareous and nutrient-poor soils, with a temperature preference for moderately warm conditions. The flowering period lasts from July to September. The seeds (diaspores) are small, averaging around 2.3 milligrams, and the leaf area is relatively large for its habit, at approximately 3,900 square millimetres.
