Symphyotrichum novi-belgii is a herbaceous, non-woody plant reaching about 1.27 metres in height. Its broad leaves have an average area of 1267 mm² and its tiny wind-dispersed seeds average 0.42 mg. The species is a neophyte in Great Britain, where it is introduced and established; it is also recorded as invasive. It prefers full sun, moderately moist, nutrient-rich, calcareous to basic soils, and tolerates low disturbance. Typical habitats include fertile meadows, nutrient-rich ruderal sites and forest edges. It flowers from September to October and forms arbuscular mycorrhizal associations.
