Position in a shady site with moderately moist soil, ideally neutral to slightly acidic. A normal garden soil without heavy feeding will suit it. Given its woodland preference, it may thrive under deciduous trees or in a shaded border where the soil remains evenly damp.
Symphytum bulbosum is a non-woody, broad-leaved herbaceous plant that reaches about 0.36 metres in height. Its original range lies within Europe; in Great Britain it is an introduced established neophyte, with the earliest record dating from 1822. The species associates with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. Flowering takes place in April and May. The plant shows a strong preference for shade, moderately moist soil, and tolerates neutral to slightly acidic conditions with moderate nutrient levels. Approximate habitat modelling suggests an affinity for shady woodland and scrub, though confidence in this inference is limited.
