Plant in full to partial shade on fresh, free‑draining soil. A neutral to alkaline (lime‑rich) substrate suits it best. Once established, it needs only moderate fertility and tolerates light disturbance poorly, so avoid heavy soil disruption near the root zone.
Taxus baccata is a woody, broad‑leaved tree indigenous to Great Britain. Typically growing to a height of 13.3 m, it has an evergreen leaf phenology and bears leaves with an average area of 51.3 mm². Its diaspores (seeds) weigh about 57.2 mg. The species is adapted to terrestrial, low‑disturbance habitats, with a preference for fresh, calcareous to alkaline soils of moderate nutrient status (Ellenberg reaction value 7, nutrients 5). It is most often found in shade and flowers from March through May.
