Grow completely submerged in a still‑water aquarium or garden pond, in a normal, moderately fertile substrate. Position in partial shade and maintain permanently wet conditions. This species tolerates only low levels of water movement or disturbance.
Vallisneria spiralis is an aquatic, herbaceous perennial of the family Hydrocharitaceae. It grows fully submerged in still or slow‑flowing fresh water, producing broad leaves from a basal rosette and typically reaching about 0.48 metres in height. The species is adapted to permanently wet, neutral to slightly acidic conditions with moderate nutrient availability and favours partially shaded sites with low physical disturbance. It forms an arbuscular mycorrhizal association. Flowering takes place from June to September. In Great Britain the plant is a neophyte, having been introduced and become established, and is not native.
