As a native annual, Vicia sativa contributes to early- to late-summer floral resources for wildlife and associates with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, which may enhance nutrient cycling in undisturbed, open habitats.
Germinates in early spring, climbs and flowers from March until August, then sets seed and dies back by late summer.

Plant in full sun and moderately moist, well-drained soil. A neutral to alkaline, medium-nutrient soil is ideal. As a climbing annual, provide a light trellis or allow it to scramble through other vegetation. Sow directly in early spring where it is to flower.
Vicia sativa is an annual climbing herb native to Great Britain. It is non-woody, with broad leaves and a typical height of 0.45 m. The leaves bear (1)3–8 pairs of variable, mucronate leaflets; the upper leaves terminate in a branched tendril. The stipules are toothed and often spotted. From March to August it produces 1–2(4) purplish or violet flowers. The fruit is a black legume, glabrous or pubescent, containing 5–12 seeds. It grows in full sun on moderately moist, medium-fertility soils that are neutral to alkaline, and it tolerates low-disturbance conditions. The species forms arbuscular mycorrhizal associations. It is not currently considered threatened.
