Xanthium spinosum is not native to Great Britain; it is an introduced species that has become established. It is a herbaceous, non-woody plant with broad leaves, reaching a typical height of around 0.5 metres. The flowers appear between July and September. Ecologically, it is associated with arable weed communities on soils that are fresh to moderately moist, neutral to weakly acidic, and low in salinity. The species shows a strong preference for warm, sunny conditions and tolerates low levels of disturbance. An arbuscular mycorrhizal association has been recorded.
