About this species

Site in a sunny position. It grows best in moist but well-drained, low-nutrient soil that remains fresh through the growing season. After flowering the foliage can be cut back to encourage fresh growth.
Scientific profile
Allium schoenoprasum is a bulbous, clump-forming herbaceous perennial. The upright, hollow, cylindrical leaves reach around 30 cm in height, forming dense tufts. From early summer to late summer, slender scapes carry globular inflorescences of many small, star-shaped, typically pink-purple flowers. The leaves and scapes die back to the bulb after flowering. The plant prefers full sun and fresh to moderately moist, neutral to slightly acidic soils of low fertility. It shows a low tolerance of disturbance. This species is native wild in Great Britain.
