Scientific profile
Salix purpurea is a deciduous shrub or small tree in the willow family (Salicaceae), native in Great Britain. It typically reaches about 2.9 metres in height and has a woody, broad-leaved habit. The plant grows in full sun on moist, moderately fertile soils that are neutral to alkaline. Flowering occurs from March to April. Its deciduous leaves average 130 mm² in area, and the minute, wind-dispersed seeds weigh roughly 0.09 mg. The species forms ectomycorrhizal associations and is found in habitats experiencing low disturbance.
