Torilis japonica is a terrestrial, non-woody herbaceous plant. It has a broad-leaved morphology and typically reaches a height of about 0.6 m. The flowering period runs from June to August. Ecologically, it is a plant of half-shade, occurring on fresh, moderately moist, nutrient-rich and strongly base-rich soils in moderately warm situations. It forms arbuscular mycorrhizal associations. The species is native in Great Britain; its Red List status has not been evaluated. Derived ecological indicator values place it primarily in tall forb communities, although field verification of habitat is lacking.
