Grow in partial shade in fresh to moderately moist, well-drained soil. The shrub adapts to alkaline substrates and does not require rich feeding.
Cornus sanguinea is a deciduous, woody shrub with broad leaves. It typically reaches a height of 2–2.3 m. The plant flowers between April and August in the British Isles. It is native in Great Britain and occurs in habitats receiving partial shade, on moderately moist soils. It favours calcareous to alkaline conditions and is not demanding of soil nutrients.
