For cultivation, place in still or slow-moving water with a muddy, calcareous substrate, in half-shade. The water should be mesotrophic to slightly nutrient-rich, and the position sheltered from strong currents and high disturbance.
Myriophyllum spicatum is a native, non-woody aquatic herb. It typically reaches heights of around 0.44 metres. The leaves are broad and the plant is adapted to life in water. Flowering occurs from May to August. Across its range it favours half-shaded situations, wet to swampy, calcareous or basic, moderately nutrient-rich conditions, and tolerates only minor disturbance. The temperature regime is moderately warm. Diaspores are minute, averaging about 0.6 mg.
